Watch the video above. The story of why we should all go to central China pretty much tells itself.

Real Shoestring Travel

Jan 31st, 2009 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Leon Logothetis has a fairly regular gig traveling around on £5 or $5 per day. Right now he’s traveling from Atlanta to Tampa and trying to get ticket to the Super Bowl. You can follow along on the Outside Blog. I highly recommend it, especially to see if he makes it into the Super Bowl tomorrow.

In his posts – and on CNN and another interview – he sounds like a fun guy. I do wonder though, how much of his ability to travel for £5 or $5 was originally facilitated by the fact that he was doing it for TV.

Convenient example of why I’m skeptical: I was watching a “reality” TV show the other night with my flat mates. On the show 3 lonely and loveless guys decide that the way to meet girls is to throw a house party. There is a montage of them advertising the party by walking around the grocery store, talking to their neighbors, and calling girls who they have recently taken on blind dates. Lo and behold, only attractive single women show up for their party. Reality TV at its finest.

With that in mind, I have a healthy dose of skepticism as to the reality of his show, “Amazing Adventures of a Nobody”. However, I do give him major points for his adventures, sounds like quite the challenge and a hell of a good time.

It’s worth joining the mailing list

Apparently I missed a £1 hotel room sale this morning at a swanky hotel in London. Which remind me that it’s worth joining hotel, airline, and destination mailing lists. You never know what type of sales and events you’ll be alerted too. Of course you also have to check the account you use to sign up with. I didn’t. Oops.

Moonrise over Nice

In late summer the sun paints the Cote d’Azur every morning and evening with a mellow red light. It makes your eye linger over the landscape and wish that there were just a couple of clouds to catch that red light, but of course there rarely are.

Stop Suffering, Start Dancing

Saturday night’s party was a great time. And as it’s a regular event, I would recommend anyone around Brussels check it out next time the party comes around. I went on my own, which can always be a bit of a challenge. Thankfully I wore a good prop. My big white hat would be snatched of my head, and I knew I I’d had a new group of friends to dance with. Some pictures of the heads my hat found itself on below.
