Background: Dive site in Con Dao

Dive site

When I was wrapping up my stay in Viet Nam I about a week to write a research paper. Rather than spending a week cooped up Ho Chi Minh City, I rented a laptop packed up my books and caught a flight to the Con Dao islands off the south coast. I spent my days SCUBA diving and my evenings cranking out the paper. For most of the time I was the only diver, and represented 50% of the western tourists on the islands. The boat in the picture was fishing near our dive site and would swing by in the late morning to sell us some really fresh lunch. It was a perfect last week of my trip.

Background: Beach Soccer in Essaouira

watching the game

Essaouira is a windy beach town on the Moroccan Atlantic coast. The tide is massive there, so at low tide there is a huge amount of beach exposed. As soon as there is space, people run out and start playing some fairly well organized pick up games that attract a few spectators. The town is a must for any trip to Morocco. But don’t plan on just lying around on the beach, the wind is fierce and limits the beach activities to more sporting ventures like soccer and windsurfing.

Eiffel Tower

I took this one way back in August ’04. This ski trip took me to a totally different side of France from the one I saw on my first trip there. Good deal more of France to see too, I reckon I’ll be back.

Background: Sunset at Phnom Bakeng

This background photo of a sunset at Phnom Bakeng was submitted by Ben Mathes. On the blog he kept for his trip, you’ll find the description for this scene:

For our last evening we went up to Phnom Bakeng (Mount Bakeng), atop which sits a moderately-size temple by Angkor’s standards. It was about 30 meters high. With the hundred or so other tourists up on the top we watched the sun go through the most spectacular light show I have ever seen.

I took 36 photos of the sky, and each one beautiful. Unfortunately we are in Battambang now, which is not much of a tourist spot despite being the second-largest city in Cambodia. Consequently the internet connection doesn’t appear to be the best so i can only share a couple of photos at a time.

Thanks Ben! If you have a picture that you think would make a good background, send it to me at weldon [at] questingforadventure.com with the story and I’ll put it in rotation.

Background: Dakar in the Distance

Atlantic at night

Toubab Diallo is a quiet little fishing town with a spectacular boutique hotel. It’s just across a bay from Dakar, which shows up as a couple of lights on the horizon. There is so little light in Toubab Diallo that I was able to just set my camera down at night, and the resulting picture is lit only by the moon. It’s an amazing place, and a must for a night if you are ever in Senegal.
