On horseback?

Apr 20th, 2009 Posted in Trip Ideas | No Comments »

I want to cross Eurasia, but apparently my goal of doing it in a crazy vehicle is too tame for some. For example, the team of three that is riding on horseback from Beijing to London.

A middle-aged British woman and two Chinese companions on Saturday set off on an epic horse ride that will see them cross China, Central Asia and Europe — and arrive in London for the 2012 Olympics.

Megan Lewis, a 60-year-old British pony breeder and head of the expedition, said the three-year trek from Beijing to London was a lifelong dream.

That’s pretty hard core. At 60 years of age, no less. Good luck to Ms. Lewis, Mr. Jing, and Mr. Wenchao. Hope to see you in London in a few years.

Taking a Bus

The Idea that kicked off this blog was an epic road trip from London to Melbourne, and from time to time after a few drinks, I get to talking about the idea again. Last night my buddies and I started dreaming a little larger for our vehicle, specifically a double-decker bus.

This certainly meets my requirement of being a perfectly ridiculous vehicle to drive across the world. Also, it turns out that you can pick them up used fairly cheaply, with very little looking I found one on Ebay for under 3,000 pounds. It also has the added bonus of providing a fair amount of livable space. The drawback of course is the size, it sucks gas, and if you have to take it on a ferry then you might pay an arm and a leg.

Still, it’s and idea I’m going to explore further.

Wait, There’s a Bus?

The Idea that provided the start for this blog was an epic road tip from London to Melbourne. It turns out, there’s a bus that pretty much does that. The Oz Bus offers a variety of routes, including one from London to Sydney.

They do the whole things good deal faster than I would like, but, I have to admit, there is something appealing about the thought of someone else doing all the driving and having a big fun group of people to hang out with all along the way.
