Traveling with social media

Oct 4th, 2009 Posted in Trip Ideas | No Comments »

CBS’s David Price is on an interesting seven day adventure across America with only $50 and an arsenal of hand-held technology to connect to every form of social media which he’ll use to find rides and lodging as he goes. I should make for an interesting week, and of course because mainstream media loves social media – hours of television.

Call me old fashioned though, but it seems like it would be a much cooler challenge to do that trip without the social media help and the notoriety of being on TV. Just hitching and couchsurfing your way across the country. Not that the social media way of doing it isn’t cool, It’d be a great trip and a cool way to involve other people in the journey. But perhaps a bit selfishly, I think it would a cooler trip just talking to folks along the way and seeing how far you can get.

To follow along with David’s trip, you can check out his page on CBS, Twitter, or Qik.

I underestimated the Queensland people

When I said “Best tourism ad campaign ever”, I apparently wasn’t giving the Queensland tourism association enough credit. Shortly after I put up the post and commented about the campaign on Twitter (you can follow me here), they started following me on Twitter.

Thing is, I didn’t even link to them from my Twitter comment, I linked to an article about their site being down. I guess they’re out hunting for people who are commenting about them, and working on some deeper engagement. They are certainly putting forward an impressive effort to get people to come visit.

Update: Looks like the @The_Best_Job was just one of the applicants posing as the real deal. However, though them magic that is twitter, I encountered the real Queensland tourism people: @Queensland. They are even more engaged on Twitter than that folks than the posers, and take the time to enage the community and answer questions. I’m well impressed.
